the ramblings of a chronic over thinker

what’s in a year?

well to start, there are 52 weeks in a year. there are at least 12 long weekends. there are birthdays, anniversaries (good and bad), holidays, dates and parties. there are causes and promotions, like november 11th (lest we forget) and february 14th (don’t forget about love). there are many parts that fit into the time frame of a ‘year’.

all the mentions above show me something kind of interesting. except for a leap year (less time in a year) we are ALWAYS working in this framework of 12 months. none of our existence happens outside of the framework of a calendar year. in north america, the so called ‘rat race’ has us all striving for something without a pause to see where we are IN the actual race! our phones, jobs, and lives keep us so enmeshed that we forget the structure we are in and the structure we support. humans are a key factor to the framework because we invented it and in a way, it supports us and our inventions. we need each other.

now that’s what i call support…

i find it mildly empowering to understand that i exist in a framework that repeats constantly. a new year is never a promise (if you’re alive) it’s kind of a guarantee. the sun will rise, it will set, a new year will come and it will go. it makes me feel confident because it confirms that i always have an aim to focus. i will always, as long as i am living, have the motivation to start again, because everyday does. we do it together.

Expectations.

Here we are again, new year, new everything. Everyone’s setting new goals to make this year better than the last. I’m all for improving yourself but why do we need a change of calendar to set these goals for ourselves?

December is inevitably an intense month. We socialize, eat and spend more than we do any of time of the year. As lovely as it can be, it usually comes with a lot of extra stress, pounds and an empty bank account. What better motivation to do better? It’s understandable that January would be a time to redeem ourselves and work on feeling better.

But resolutions can come with their own set of stress. We all set these huge goals for ourselves right after we’ve indulged, instead of constantly trying to improve ourselves year round. It can be really challenging to make these big epic changes, especially after a month of indulgences.

Starting a new year can feel like the best time for a fresh start but the reality is, you’re still the same person you were December 31st. Change takes time and baby steps. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself to carry through with big goals. Try setting small goals gradually that might lead to a bigger lifestyle change or personal accomplishment. Focus on a goal but aim smaller and strive to continuously chip away at each step you need to get there.

It's a brand new year and we've taken a moment to think about how fortunate we all are. Praise has welcomed a brand new healthy baby boy - who’s name is in fact not Gary, but Zieohanachidi (Zo for short) - and we all have so many things to be thankful for. The people we surround ourselves with, the job that we love, all of the miscellaneous possessions we have been fortunate enough to afford - the list could go on. This got us thinking.

After brainstorming with our staff, we've decided we want to show some support for our city. We are all contributing and accepting item donations to Main Street Project for the rest of January and all of February. Please see the list below for their item shortages. Please bring in any of the following to receive a 10% discount on your service. Don't have anything booked but still want to donate? Save your discount for a future appointment or use it toward a product purchase! Stay tuned on our social media for reminders!

Let's show Winnipeg some love. Everybody deserves to have water, warm feet, and all of life's necessities.

New Year, New You?

Welcome back! We've started a New Year and we want to know how you feel! There always seems to be so much pressure when a New Year starts. What types of resolutions do you make? Do you make any at all?

Some say starting the year off with high expectations or too many resolutions is setting yourself for failure or disappointment, which is a little depressing I guess. What if we make one goal. Let's ask our stylists for some inspo!

What are some of our New Year Resolutions.

Kitty: “1. More meditation 2. More self care/down time 3. Learning to say no and not feel guilty.”

Olivia: “Don’t do resolutions. If you want to change something, start now! As soon as you’re putting it off, you’re making your first excuse.”

Leah: “Start an Etsy shop!”

Niasha: “Money management! Consolidate, budget, save, invest.”

Kiah: “Sit down with Olivia so that she can show me how to properly budget and not spend all of my money on clothes.”

Danika: “Taking better care of myself, even if it feels selfish :)”

Chelsea: “Focus on self-improvement/self-care. Make monthly goals and limit technology use - live in the moment!”

Praise: “New Years are like brand new days - a chance to be better than you were the day/year before. That being said, we shouldn’t wait for the New Year to improve. Strive daily!”

Well, there you have it. Some ideas, or some advice* (*Olivia). Just don’t be too hard on yourself. You’re human, you’re great & you’ve already accomplished so much!

We are excited to be back open after some wonderful holidays. See you at the salon soon!

Important question: When is it time to revamp your fashion?

It's coming up to the busy holiday season followed by a BRAND NEW YEAR. If you're experiencing the following thoughts, you should perhaps consider switching things up.

  • Struggle on the daily to decide what to wear

  • You have more worn out items than fresh items

  • Your 'to-buy' list is 2 pages long

  • You wear the same thing to every event

  • You have things in your closet that you wore when you were 15

This doesn't mean you need to dish out all of your holiday savings to buy all new things for yourself. Here are some suggestions in regards to what you should make sure you have, and how you can make some improvements on a budget.

The Staple Items

  • The favourite denim

  • Basics (classic T, classic sweatshirt...etc.)

  • Cozy winter sweater

  • A “going out” top

  • Every day boot

  • Layering piece (tunic dress, over-sized vest, get creative!)

Invite a friend over (**IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure it’s someone who's style you're in to) and get them to take a peak in your closet. Sometimes all it takes is fresh eyes to put pieces together you never thought of! Try swapping some items with a close friend or head over to your favourite thrift store!

Start the New Year off with a freshened up closet. Get rid of the items just causing clutter and gift yourself a few new treats to put a little pep in your step :). You work hard, this season can get wild, so treat yo'self.
