diversity means what exactly?

this is cool

here’s an internet definition from the oxford dictionary:
di·ver·si·ty

/dəˈvərsədē,dīˈvərsədē/

noun

  1. 1.

the state of being diverse; variety.

"there was considerable diversity in the style of the reports"

  2. 2.

the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc.

"equality and diversity should be supported for their own sake"

so much diversity in these colours

some of you know that february, in north america, is black history month. the goal is to bring awareness and celebrate the beauty of being black. the month is commemorated to enlighten others to the accomplishments and designations black people have garnered throughout history. cool? of course!

but, dear reader, do you like all these calendar reminders of how ‘different’ we all are? does it help you in any way? will there be a test? will knowing this information make me a better person? what about the rest of the year? is there an awareness month for every race or grouping? how does that work? i welcome all suggestions even though i know that there can’t be a month dedicated to EVERY ASPECT of our lives, right? right?!

so many questions rambling around…

is it time for love? yes, yes it is time.

so beautiful

did you know that there are many types of love? eros, philia, storge, and agape are just a few. agape love is unconditional and is the most displayed love i think or maybe the most spiritual? it’s the love i should have for donald trump and company, because he is a person on earth, just like me. it’s difficult to focus on love in these times and it’s difficult to send love to folks we may not feel a connection to.

yes

more yes!

family love warms my heart

my post today is just a friendly reminder about love and loving each other as much as we can. this month of love, ‘diversity’, and cold isn’t the only time we should look towards love. we should do it every month! here are partial lyrics to a song about love that reminds me to stay focused on loving. i hope it helps you as much as it has helped me. it’s an old song, but the message makes me emotional every time i here him sing it. enjoy!

Love
So many things I've got to tell you
But I'm afraid I don't know how
'Cause there's a possibility that
You'll look at me differently
Love
Ever since the first moment I spoke your name
From then on I knew that by you being in my life
Things were destined to change cause

Love
So many people use your name in vain
Love
Those who have faith in you sometimes go astray
Love
Through all the ups and downs, the joys and hurts
Love
For better or worse I still will choose you first

if i opened an amazon link from our online store, would you shop there?

maybe it could be cool, no?

in a recent staff meeting we discussed products and incentives with a high emphasis on ‘selling’ of course. the number one complaint from my stylists is that sometimes the product they’re looking for isn’t on the shelf. it has been sold out, not ordered, or discontinued. this is time in the dialogue that the client says, ”i’ll just look on amazon.“

-ahem-

really? you’re just going to go straight to the online mall? not going to give us a chance to help you or make a sale?

the convenience is real. with a click of a button, you have curl cream and mousse heading to your address. i get it, but i also don’t get it. if our clients are going to just go to the online mall to get 10/10 hair, then should we even be selling OUR choice faves? let me be clear, if you are purchasing PROFESSIONAL GRADE PRODUCTS AND TOOLS on amazon, the price will be right, that’s is a fact. BUT (big but because it’s really important) whatever you purchased might not be what you thought you purchased. for the most part, the products, and tools sold here can do the job, it’s just not vetted the same and might be old or discontinued.

when you purchase from us, we are able to contact the seller and even get answers to your issues. kevin murphy and surface (2 of our featured product lines) have taken a lot of time and money to produce products for your hair, skin and nails that compliment and enhance your natural features. no trash ingredients are used, research is deployed to find better ingredients that out preform and last. every decision made is to put your hair, skin, and nails in the best position for optimal growth and development. i mean, you get what you pay for right?

last question, would you buy our stuff if it was on amazon? for real, let me know your thoughts in the comments.

what’s in a year?

well to start, there are 52 weeks in a year. there are at least 12 long weekends. there are birthdays, anniversaries (good and bad), holidays, dates and parties. there are causes and promotions, like november 11th (lest we forget) and february 14th (don’t forget about love). there are many parts that fit into the time frame of a ‘year’.

all the mentions above show me something kind of interesting. except for a leap year (less time in a year) we are ALWAYS working in this framework of 12 months. none of our existence happens outside of the framework of a calendar year. in north america, the so called ‘rat race’ has us all striving for something without a pause to see where we are IN the actual race! our phones, jobs, and lives keep us so enmeshed that we forget the structure we are in and the structure we support. humans are a key factor to the framework because we invented it and in a way, it supports us and our inventions. we need each other.

now that’s what i call support…

i find it mildly empowering to understand that i exist in a framework that repeats constantly. a new year is never a promise (if you’re alive) it’s kind of a guarantee. the sun will rise, it will set, a new year will come and it will go. it makes me feel confident because it confirms that i always have an aim to focus. i will always, as long as i am living, have the motivation to start again, because everyday does. we do it together.

started from the bottom now we where??

clearly at the top! using gold to lotion is a sign of wealth, right?

not familiar with the drake song? started from the bottom now we’re here! here meaning the top! the pinnacle! success! “look ma we made it!”

I done kept it real from the jump
Living at my mama house we'd argue every month
*Playa, I was tryna get it on my own
Workin' all night, traffic on the way home
And my uncle calling me like, "Where ya at?
I gave you the keys told you bring it right back"
*Playa, I just think it's funny how it goes
Now I'm on the road, half a million for a show

so if you’re not a drake fan, or familiar with the song, it’s cool. it’s really just a statement of success and stating how far one has come to reach the top. but what is the top? what is success?

i was in a great conversation about success and we concluded that success isn’t the top. success is the amount of times you slipped off the top and then had to climb back up again. that’s one of the real meanings in my humble opinion. the ability to KEEP going no matter what comes or what goes. we start to believe that ‘making it’ is all we need to be focused on. the reality is, making it and continuing to stay positive, in spite of life/living, is what we should be pushing as a narrative. “look ma, i made it!”, is great and everything, but believe me, you’re not going to just get to coast after that. trust that things get more complicated when you have a view from the top.

feels amazing!

i definitely feel like i have reached ‘success’ here and there a few times, and it felt amazing, it felt wonderful, it felt good! i have also slipped off my ‘top’ probably more than i reached the top, but i’m still here, enjoying every slip, slide and climb. i wonder if jeff besos slips here and there? i mean, he IS human right?

changes: it’s a love hate

i love change! i do! anyone who knows me knows that i’m always up for change. i think it’s really the indicator of growth. i strive to do my best to grow everyday when i can and with that—changes! i’ll be honest, i’m a hairstylist that became a business owner. a lot of the business issues/stuff my company has gone through in the last 14 years are in part due to me and my (sometimes poor) decision making. the shop hinges on my knowledge and understanding of supply and demand. i didn’t read financials well, and wasn’t bothered by their gibberish to want to gain clarity. i developed a healthy distaste for cra and all things tax related, and once again, felt no pressure to address concerns. fast forward to now—business courses, a degree, a family, and i can see how i need to change the way the shop has been operating.

CHANGE IT UP

hopefully you all received the emails with the new process for tuesday appointments. we won’t have ayoub at the desk, as tuedays are quite slow and there aren’t enough booked stylist to warrant support staff. we are hoping that most of you can book online, or through email, or even leave a message! no one will be answering the phone so keep that in mind when you are trying to book or get support. ayoub will return the messages as soon as he returns on wednesday.

we truly do thank all of you that patronize our shop! you are the ones that keep us going and motivate us to grow and improve! if you have any questions, issues or concerns, please let me know. i hope my message finds you well!
