Host the Ultimate BBQ

Summertime brings on one of my favorite activities, hosting! Most people find it a hassle and prefer to never have people over. Yes. It is a hassle! You gotta clean BEFORE your guests arrive and again AFTER they leave. You gotta make sure that there’s going to be enough of everything for everyone (regardless of diet) and you gotta have enough space to house it all!

Hosting a get-together can be a daunting task but I am here to reassure you that it can be easy, and quite fun if you organize yourself and follow a few tips. First of all, A BBQ is the best idea because it’s outside! This minimizes the amount of people in your home, which equals less cleaning! You will need to make sure guests know where the bathroom is ahead of time, as this will be the only reason anyone (except for you) goes into the house.

You need a space with enough seating for your guests. We have a large tables and a few smaller cocktail tables on our deck to keep snacks or spark smaller conversations. The large dining table is where everyone comes to eat, while the smaller ones allow for more mixing and mingling. If your BBQ is an evening one, make sure there is enough lighting in your ‘seating area’ to keep the party going.

It never hurts to have a few games kicking around on a table or two. It gives folks a chance to interact in a different way. Along with games, don’t forget the music. Now days you can find playlists that suit any type of party you are hosting. you can even have a few different ones to guide the evening along. Maybe play some music that is fun and fast as guests arrive, then slow it down while people are dining.

That brings me to the food. It’s very important to make sure that everyone can eat and there will be more than enough food. I usually aim to make more than needed and in the case if there are a lot of leftovers, i am prepared with cute takeaway boxes for my guests to use. this keeps my fridge space, which is already at a premium, free for my real ‘everyday life’ food. Make sure you find out everyone’s preference before hand and then throw it on an open flame. Grilled anything is the best! Make a few salads and prepare the appetizers ahead of time as well. That way, all you need to worry about is the food you’ll be grilling. Dessert can be real fun too. Watermelons are a crowdpleaser, but if you really want to make this ULTIMATE, try throwing some fruit on the grill and serve with some french vanilla ice cream! Pineapple and peaches are my favorite. And just like that, BOOM! You ‘don did it!

Mexi-corn salad. Get it in ya!

This salad is so simple and so deelish! Never have leftovers…

  • 6 grilled corn cobs

  • 1 can of black beans

  • 1/2 clup sliced cherry tomatoes

  • 1/2 cup cubed queso

  • 1 tsp fresh cilantro (change to oregano if you’re like me)

  • 1 tbls lemon juice

Dressing

  • minced jalepeno

  • 1/4 cup sun dried tomato dressing

  • 1 tsp honey

All you need to do is put all the ingredients into a bowl, add the dressing and mix, mix, mix. I like to keep it in the fridge for at least 30 minutes so all the flavors can meld together.

Truth be told, you can put whatever you want to in a bowl and drizzle it with whatever you want! That’s the beauty of salad and the beauty of summer cooking!

The matter of small talk. You know?

When was the last time you had a conversation with a human face? If someone was to ask you a few questions off the cuff, what would your response be? What would you say? What would you ask? When was the last time you had a conversation for the purpose of purely conversing? It is very important that we take the time to talk and to discover new things about each other.

In an time when speaking face to face is almost foreign, let us give ‘small talk’ some serious dap! It’s a great way to pass the time and you might learn a thing or two. Here are a few questions that might make your next human contact meeting quite interesting.

What’s the most unbelievable thing that’s ever happened to you?

Are you reading any good books right now? I’d love some recommendations. How about shows?

Are there any apps on your phone that you can’t live without?

If you could only watch one genre of movies for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Do you have any podcast suggestions for my drive?

Oh, and just because talking is great, let’s not forget about her good friend listening. It makes for a neccessary part of the art of conversation. ;)

Top Tips for Luscious Locks

Freshair Boutique

It’s a rough time of year for you skin and hair. Let us give you some tips on how to keep your hair happy during these frigid temps!

1. don't wash too often - if you have to shower every day, try investing in a co-wash so you don't have to use a shampoo every day. Shampoo is harsher on your hair and strips  healthy oils that your hair needs. Our favourite? Try Restore by Kevin Murphy.

2. condition - did you know when using Kevin Murphy conditioners, you are recommended to leave about 70% of the conditioner in your hair? This allows it to act as a treatment as well!

3. Invest in a serum. - young again serum is liquid gold. We've seen it transform fried bleached hair. Use on wet and dry hair, fresh out of the shower to a touch on the ends to complete a styled look!

4. brush your hair. - using a wide tooth comb or a nice brush, comb through your hair. This will naturally disperse your oils to condition your hair. When you don't brush, the oils will build up at your root making it seem like you need to wash again! We carry all sorts of brushes and combs for your picking.

5. Get the occasional trim. - The point of our clean up service is to keep your ends looking fresh. $10 gets you a 15 minute dry trim to help you out with all your split end needs. Book a clean up today!

If you have any questions for your specific hair needs, do not hesitate to call us! 204-414-9023.

….And to all a goodnight!

Wowwwweeeeee! Another year in the books! Just like that it’s time for new beginnings, new lists and new goals! 2018 has been a whirlwind of a year for Freshair. We saw some really great stylists move on to new and amazing endeavors, and with them some fantastic clients as well. We will miss you all!

We have added some new stylists to our crew and I’m very excited to see what 2019 brings to them and to our lovely little location here on Academy Road! To all of our loyal clients and new subscribers, THANK YOU! It’s all of you that make this whole gig so much more interesting.

When I was thinking of a way to communicate my gratitude, I couldn’t help but think of all the times we say thank you and say it with very little conviction. We’re taught as young children to always say please and thank you like it’s verbiage necessary for living. And though yes, saying please and thank you is polite, it is now just that. Daily verbiage.

Thank you is almost so watered down that I’m not sure it really does the best job of showing sincere gratitude. When was the last time you said thank you? When was the last time you REALLY thanked someone for something? When was the last time you went out of your way to make a connection with someone who did something really nice to/for you?

What I Am trying to say is much gratefulness and gratitude for all of you that either work at Freshair Boutique or patronize our business. all the best to you and your families and remember that we appreciate you all! Blessings and I hope to see you in the new year!
