Top Tips for Luscious Locks

Freshair Boutique

It’s a rough time of year for you skin and hair. Let us give you some tips on how to keep your hair happy during these frigid temps!

1. don't wash too often - if you have to shower every day, try investing in a co-wash so you don't have to use a shampoo every day. Shampoo is harsher on your hair and strips  healthy oils that your hair needs. Our favourite? Try Restore by Kevin Murphy.

2. condition - did you know when using Kevin Murphy conditioners, you are recommended to leave about 70% of the conditioner in your hair? This allows it to act as a treatment as well!

3. Invest in a serum. - young again serum is liquid gold. We've seen it transform fried bleached hair. Use on wet and dry hair, fresh out of the shower to a touch on the ends to complete a styled look!

4. brush your hair. - using a wide tooth comb or a nice brush, comb through your hair. This will naturally disperse your oils to condition your hair. When you don't brush, the oils will build up at your root making it seem like you need to wash again! We carry all sorts of brushes and combs for your picking.

5. Get the occasional trim. - The point of our clean up service is to keep your ends looking fresh. $10 gets you a 15 minute dry trim to help you out with all your split end needs. Book a clean up today!

WASH IT OUT How many days do you go between washes?  Do you wash your hair every time you wash your body? News. That is too much washing! Not to get all scientific on everyone but the amounts of natural oils our scalps produce do not need to be cleansed daily.  Washing your hair daily never allows for your scalp to produce the sebum (oil) it needs to condition and coat your hair.

If it's been over two or three days between your last wash make sure to wash twice.  To make sure you aren't wasting your product, shampoo with a nickel size first.  A nickel size won't be enough, but as you work it in and rinse it out you'll be able to get a better lather with the second wash.  Using the same amount of shampoo for the second wash should result in more lather and more cleansing.  I feel like what folks normally do is squeeze out a silver dollar amount of product and just keep adding more as they wash.  So much waste develops from this.  If you wash a few times with a nickel size of product you'll get a better cleanse AND save more of your shampoo.

The sulphate free shampoos we carry are great for you and your hair.  (Just a side note, if you're not using a sulphate free shampoo yet you better get on it.  I'll talk about sulphate free shampoo's another time....)

Woman washing her hair

We have a cure for what your hair needs.  Dry? Fine? Curly?  There are shampoos and conditioners for every hair type, ask your stylist what they suggest.  Side bar- if you have as much hair as a Sasquatch then turn the nickel size to a quarter or loonie...  Maybe this up-coming week challenge yourself and eliminate one wash from your washing cycle and see if it makes a difference.
