Protect Yourself. shanghaiSummer is officially here!  What are your plans to keep the sun from frying you up?  It's one thing to protect your skin, but what about your hair?  I recommend thing likes hats or scarves.  Anything to keep your hair from the sun's rays especially before 1 in the afternoon (the sun's heat is more damaging in the morning than in the afternoon).

tumblr_m09sz3xtha1qbiu5fo1_500Don't forget to protect your locks with products that contain SPF.  We have a variety of products that can protect your hair.  Kevin Murphy is stocked with young again, anti-gravity, damage manager, and hair resort spray.  One of these should be able to take care of your lovely locks.

Bump on it

freshairboutique

Snapseed+8Now that I'm nearing the end of my pregnancy I'm struggling a little with my wardrobe.  Thank god it hasn't been too hot but there are only so many maxi dresses I can buy.  Fortunately I gained more weight around my lower half so I can fit into most of my old jackets. sweaters and cardigans.

hatch5I've long given up on wearing heels but because I have such wide feet, not all flat styles work.  I've resorted to Birkenstocks and the occasional converse (when I can get help to lace them up) .  Layers also make me feel good when I'm pregnant.  I did a lot of vests and long sweaters in the spring as the weather was thawing.  For some reason, this pregnancy, I've been really exposing my bump.  I've been wearing things that show off the shape and you know what, I'm comfortable with it.

jacket over tank

hoodie over tank

chambray over tank maxi, i'm noticing a trend..

Gone are the days of mumu's and shapeless shifts folks!  It's a new day to show your bump off.  If you are in Winnipeg, check out Bump Maternity for some great outfits.  They are our neighbors at the shop so if you're in for a 'do' and are expecting?  Check them out.

The perm

freshairboutique

bradley-cooper-1-600x450I think the perm is one of the most interesting hairstyles of all time.  It can be pretty good but most of us know them to be pretty bad.  There have been a few perms going on in the shop as of late and it makes me wonder...

medium_portraitIn the past ten years, I've done a number of perms.  Perms for gals who have limp hair and want a pick me up.  Perms for lazy folks that just want a wash and go.  I've even done a half perm for a client who has half of her hair naturally straight and the other half naturally curly!  My next perm is a few weeks away and I thought I should share, in my opinion, some tips and tricks.

-go curlier than you would like.  If you're the type that just wants a loose wave or body perm, go curlier. Shampooing breaks down the curl, so in a few months your perm might be gone.

-get a consultation.  I don't recommend perming hair that is chemically processed.  The act of perming is a chemical process so doing both can be damaging to your hair.

-get proper products.  When you're consulting with your stylist they should be able to give you some suggestions on what to use during this time.  It's important to use the right products to maintain the curl and health of your hair.

-don't expect too much.  If you have six hairs on your head don't think that the perm will be the game changer you were looking for.  You'll still have six hairs, they'll just be permed...  Some images clients bring in show a curly-haired gal with an abundance of hair.  The fullness of hair can make of break how your perm sits and falls.  Be prepared that it may not look like the picture in your mind.

-just relax.  A perm is short for permanent but we all know that there is no such thing.  In the event your perm sucks, there's a lot that can be done.  If not, you can always go for that pixie you've been wondering about...  It IS just hair.  It's not that serious.

If you ever want to try a perm ask your stylist!  They can be fun and can really add a new dimension to your hair styling routine.  Would you ever do it?

Peace

The new shop?

freshairboutique

how-much-does-it-costs-to-renovate-4-room-hdb Guys, there was supposed to be a new shiny shop as of June 1.  The shop is not new yet.  The shop is not shiny yet.  We haven't started anything.  I was just wanted to keep you all posted on the status of our renovations, seeing that I've been talking about it for months...

Renovation-mortgage-1024x682

The City of Winnipeg has been holding us up with permits and things.  I understand that permits are set in place to make sure that things go smoothly but good god!  I wish there was an easier way!  First to get by the permit thing, and then there's the actual renovations!  We all know that can be terrifying because one never knows how renos will end.

GREEN CIRCLE SALONS GCS logo DECAL-1It's official guys!  We are officially a Green Circle Salon as of July first!  I'm very excited to introduce this new initiative to Winnipeg as the first salon (that I know of) that is committed to recycling up to 90% of the waste we produce while hooking you up with your hair dos.

With this program we will be able to recycle almost everything we use that produces some sort of waste.  Be it chemical, hair, paper, plastic, wax and wax strips... It's incredible!  When I opened up this shop 4 years ago I hoped for something like this to aid in lowering my salon's carbon footprint.  Unfortunately this service wasn't available in Manitoba until now!

Check out this video.  You'll be surprised at how much waste is produced by a simple cut and color service.  All the waste being produced by the services we perform will be turned into something else.  Some waste is turned into fuel for machines and others are made into bicycles and play structure for kids.  How does this work you ask?  Let me tell you!

GCS will pick up Freshair Boutique's waste and ship it to its appropriate recycling destination.  This service comes with a small fee.  We will be charging an environmental fee of $1.50 for every service bill.  This surcharge is similar to the fee you get charged at a grocery store when you buy soda in cans, glass, or plastic.  This charge is what allows us to ship the waste away and allows the companies to change the waste into something useful and great!

I know that some of you may have an issue with the surcharge, but I urge you to watch the video and see how great this system is.  Because of clients like you who choose to support local, and who believe in a better place to live for your and your families, a system like this is needed.  GCS has salons all over Canada.  It's largest concentration in the western part of Canada and I'd love for the prairies to take up the cause as well.

I know Winnipeggers aren't always receptive to change but this service is something that I think is important for businesses like mine that add to the environmental decline of our wonderful earth and sometimes our health.  I hope that all of you that patronize us won't be discouraged by our efforts to really help improve our lives and lifestyles.

Please feel free to ask me any questions about this initiative.  I also ask that you do all you can, in any way you can, to try to make our communities and our environment sustainable.  Is a $1.50 to much to ask?  Thanks so much for supporting Freshair Boutique and our commitment:

Choosing our business helps you get on the right track visually, with our beauty services, while consuming less, reusing certain items and recycling.  Our main goal is to put the best you together, while doing the least damage possible to the earth and ourselves.

That's the fresh perspective...

Thanks!
