WASH IT OUT How many days do you go between washes?  Do you wash your hair every time you wash your body? News. That is too much washing! Not to get all scientific on everyone but the amounts of natural oils our scalps produce do not need to be cleansed daily.  Washing your hair daily never allows for your scalp to produce the sebum (oil) it needs to condition and coat your hair.

If it's been over two or three days between your last wash make sure to wash twice.  To make sure you aren't wasting your product, shampoo with a nickel size first.  A nickel size won't be enough, but as you work it in and rinse it out you'll be able to get a better lather with the second wash.  Using the same amount of shampoo for the second wash should result in more lather and more cleansing.  I feel like what folks normally do is squeeze out a silver dollar amount of product and just keep adding more as they wash.  So much waste develops from this.  If you wash a few times with a nickel size of product you'll get a better cleanse AND save more of your shampoo.

The sulphate free shampoos we carry are great for you and your hair.  (Just a side note, if you're not using a sulphate free shampoo yet you better get on it.  I'll talk about sulphate free shampoo's another time....)

Woman washing her hair

We have a cure for what your hair needs.  Dry? Fine? Curly?  There are shampoos and conditioners for every hair type, ask your stylist what they suggest.  Side bar- if you have as much hair as a Sasquatch then turn the nickel size to a quarter or loonie...  Maybe this up-coming week challenge yourself and eliminate one wash from your washing cycle and see if it makes a difference.

That's the fresh perspective...

I've had enough.  -39 windchills and knee-length North Faces have paved the way for far too long. I'm ready for +5 and denim jackets! I'd love to pull out my beloved floral Doc Martens without fear of breaking my neck on all that ice. While I can't hurry mother nature, there are a few things I can do to prepare myself, and my garden. Now is a fantastic time to get certain things started indoors, so that when that inevitable thaw arrives, you've got some seedlings ready to transplant by May.

I was browsing Pinterest the other day, and stumbled upon a BEAUTIFUL photo of ginger growing in a container. This sent me into a flurry of google searches and page flips, until I could no longer hold my excitement, and decided I must try it out for myself.

Start off with a pot about twice the diameter of your root. Pick a fairly fresh, preferably organic 'hand' with lots of 'fingers'. Fill 'er up with a good, hearty potting mix.

Moisten up that soil. Ginger loves warm, moist soil.

20130324-134404.jpg

Nestle your root on the soil, and place your pot in a warm spot. Your ginger won't  need direct sunlight at this point.

Although ginger is a fairly hearty root and can survive dry spells, it's best to keep the soil evenly moistened for optimal growth.

By fall, your tiny litte root could have yielded up to four times the amount of ginger. It's a bit slow going, but soon you should see a bit of green sprout up.

Stay tuned for updates on how this little guy is doing, and more!

have a great week!

hey boys...

Chilly City I think that I thought that the worst was over and I was wrong.  The cold has taken me to new lows and now I'm counting down the days till I can wear no socks.  Yesterday was SOOOO awful, and as I loaded up my car with groceries and ran the cart back to it's shed, I instantly felt better when I realized that as cold as it was, I wasn't that cold!

I broke down last year and bought a proper parka.  I make sure that I ALWAYS keep the mittens in the parka's pocket and I purchased a jacket that came with a hood.  This was just in case I ever forgot my toque.  I also splurged on some leather Sorels.  The jig is up, I live in Winnipeg and even though spring is supposed to be springing, we all know we have about 3 more weeks of iciness before she arrives.

Until last year I never wanted a parka because I wanted to look stylish at all times... I don't know if it's my age, or what, but I'm over being cold.  Boys, there are great parkas out there that you can find that are stylish and function quite well.  Also, if you play your cards right and make your purchase now, you're sure to save up to 70% of the cost as most stores are preparing for their spring/summer fashions.

If you haven't made the switch to a proper parka and you live in Manitoba, all the best to you...
