Did you know? National Men Make Dinner Day

Freshair Boutique

Okay - here we go.

If you are like most of us here at Freshair, you likely didn't know this past Thursday was ‘National Men Make Dinner Day’. I know the first reaction, my first reaction, is ARE YOU FOR REAL? Why is this a thing? All this is doing is enforcing the stereotype of women in the kitchen, etc… But what if we chose a different way of looking at this? What if we just laugh at this for what it is?

In today's day and age, we expect a less traditional way of thinking and share responsibilities of preparing meals each and every day and making sure there is a decent wholesome meal on the table. This is 100% rational and the way it should be. However, that doesn't mean that the majority of people actually live like this. I think there is still a lot of work to do on this front but it is hilarious to me to think that some men don't know how to cook a meal. That is why I choose to look at this and laugh and think, who's the sucker that doesn't know how to feed himself?

The jyst - Parents, teach your children how to cook. Already an adult and was never taught? Pull out a recipe or Pinterest page and get crackin’. Be the best you can be and help your partner out around the house - REGARDLESS OF YOUR GENDER.

I read a few articles on this topic and most of them held a very angry tone. Instead, let’s laugh together and if you missed this past Thursday, try to convince them it’s actually the second Thursday in November ;)

First impressions: How to make ‘em and how to bounce back from bad ones…

We’ve all been there, meeting someone for the first time and saying all the wrong things. Or even worse, being out of your mind so you don’t remember what you said at all! Impressions are a part of life we can do nothing about. The reality is, as much as we try, we do judge each other and our actions.

I believe the best way to make a good impression is to just be yourself and read the social cues. Just mirror the situation you’re in. If the mood is somber, don’t break out into a song and dance. If everyone is pumped up and jazzed, ditch the long face.

Look the person in the eyes when you’re being introduced and give a decent handshake. It’s good to be able to engage in casual banter so if the person asks you a question, answer and then reply with one of your own. One word answers are a conversation stopper and shifty eyes make people uncomfortable.

Unfortunately if you flubbed a first impression HARD, pray to cosmos that you never see that person again! I’m serious! Studies show it is really hard to change someones perspective of you if you defecated on their great grandmother doily at her funeral! There is not much one can do after that but to send a gift basket, mountains of apologies, and an offer to have the doily dry cleaned.

In most cases, bad first impressions happen when you fail to be yourself, you are under the influence or you don’t pay attention to the social ques of the situation. When you look at it like that, it’s pretty easy to avoid. Let it be known that humans are funny individuals and for the most part cannot be pleased. That being said, just do your best and be yourself!

GOBBLE GOBBLE!

So this weekend is Thanksgiving! What are you doing to show your appreciation to those in your life? We thought, to help you out a bit, we could give you some ideas for topics to discuss during your dinner! What’s acceptable? What’s not? Don’t worry, we got you!

Thanksgiving Dinner Do’s:

  • Do acknowledge any small child at the gathering. Feel free to ask questions about their development to their parents (parents love talking about their kids. you cannot go wrong).

  • Do try to keep your topics on positive type things like, the tasty food and the ingredients used. Example, “Is there turmeric in this? It tastes delicious! Did you know turmeric is the new super-spice..blah, blah, blah….” FYI: turmeric IS the new super-spice. You’re welcome.

  • Do try to listen more than you speak. These days, everyone has something to say and we never really listen. Here’s your chance.

Thanksgiving Dinner Don’ts:

  • Do not bring up Donald Trump. Just don’t do it. Everyone will be in a terrible mood. Also, we’re not American…. Ha! Unless you are!

  • Do not talk about yourself too much. Sure, this may be the only time you hang around this much family but try to keep it simple. No one likes a braggart.

  • Do not get wasted! I repeat, DO NOT GET WASTED. Just get buzzed enough to let your aunties remarks about your current relationship status (single) and your waistline (expanding) slide right off your back. No one likes a lush either….

OK folks! Go forth and be thankful!! Happy Thanksgiving!

DON'T GET DRY dry-skin-face

February is here and it is cold.  How much thought have you put into your hair, skin, and nails?  Do you have a unique regimen or some amazing products that keep you hydrated?  What are some of the things you do to beat the freezing temps?

I use Shea butter on my skin.  When I remember to, I use almond oil on my cuticles.  Then there's the hair.  I can't seem to keep it moisturized.  For you Afro haired ladies, protective styling is the best way to keep your hair moisturized in the dry winter months.

If your hair isn't an Afro, don't forget to use a mask a few times a month.  They are amazing and do a lot for moisture retention.  That's the fresh perspective...

A new day, a new chance. 7707981858_4aa5f3e666_b

Something about the New year really gets me excited.  I mean, I do LOVE Christmas (it's my fave holiday) but resolutions remind me of new beginnings and new starts.  Promises to myself to try to be better, and to set goals.  New years make me think of new days and how every new day gives us another chance.

Jesse Matas of Riding Mountain National Park skates on the smooth-as-glass ice covering Clear Lake in the Park on a sunny and warm Monday afternoon. Matas skated across the lake to the townsite of Wasagaming and back again. The lack of snow so far this year has created a rare opportunity for winter enthusiasts to enjoy the clear ice.

I'm often asked how I do it, or how I keep it together?  I try to get a good sleep and I wait for the next day.  Have you ever seen a prairie sun rise?  It's incredible.  It's very inspiring.  It makes you feel----I can't describe it.  You need to see one to understand.   The morning sun shows us the newness of the day on an expanse of field till your eyes can see nothing but the horizon.  That act of the 'sun coming up' has a way of dissolving the drama from the day before it.

We just finished conducting a questionnaire about how Freshair Boutique can be better and I would like to thank all the clients that participated in this effort to help us grow and be a staple in the community.  We are turning 6 this year and every single new day has brought us to this point. We are happy to have another chance to help you with all your hair needs and nail needs and fashion needs and, you know where this is going...
