FITNESS

Do you think stretching is working out? Like, if you spent 45 minutes really getting sweaty and you never jumped once, would you consider that a ‘workout’? Even that word workout! It sounds so sweaty and hard! There must be other words we can use to name our efforts to be fit. I have been toying with the word “training”. “Sorry I missed your call, I was just finishing up training.”, or “Do you want to meet me later to train?”. You get me, or no?

I had a crazy training session last week where I did stretching for 45 mins and wow! I was really sweaty! It was hard! Guys, yoga is hard! The breathing was tricky, but once you breathe and focus, it helps to keep you going.

Even if you don’t think yoga is considered training, like I do, one cannot deny, it is CHALLENGING! If you’re looking for some challenging fitness training, try some yoga, it’s pretty intense.

FITNESS

It’s no secret that I love to move my body! I have found over the past few years that fitness, to me, is more than just looking good and working out. It’s about feeling strong and healthy and looking decent while doing so!

Tennis is a game I grew up watching and in 2009, I decided to get lessons and really try. I have always loved to watch and my father used to play when I was young. It’s been around my entire life and as I’ve played, I’ve improved. It’s still a challenge though, and that’s why it’s fitness to me.

Tennis allows me to run around, get my heart rate up, and all the while, reminding me to breathe, relax and stay calm. Does that make sense that so many controversial things are happening between a serve and your opponents first stroke? Coaches are always telling me to relax and wait for the ball, while making sure I get back and I don’t forget to breathe because the anticipation is enough to knock you down. That’s how I feel anyway.

It seems that tennis has really taken a positive upswing because the pandemic has forced us to think outside the box in every aspect of our lives. Folks are looking for new things to do that follow covid protocols. Many outdoor courts are fully booked nowadays and because you never really get close to your opponent it works during a the era of social distancing. Lucky for me, the girls play. We try and get out as much as we can. I am a member at our local tennis club and I can always access other players when I’m looking for a bit more of a challenge than a 6 year old.

What kind of fitness are you into, if at all? Are you the type that doesn’t enjoy getting sweaty and out of breath? I mean, tennis might be for you because you can play at a pace as slow or as fast as you like! Honestly, I’ve never played a sport where so many people play over the age of 55! You can literally play for life!

PLANTS

IMG_8487.jpeg

Introducing, the OKWUMABUA PLANT BIBLE! How many plants do you have in your home? We are at 36. We lost Tamika (plant) to mite last week so…

I like to name my plants. For me, this adds to how I care for them. Giving them names, sort of humanizes them a little. Does that make sense at all? For example, I have 4 Sansevieria plants. Sebastian, Sarah, Simon and Sandy. It make it easier for me if the plant name and species sort of match. Fergus is our resident fiddle leaf fig, but Fiona is also a fig. Just not a fiddle leaf. Phineaus is our philodendron and he tried to quit us, but I brought him back to life (he loves me now). Monica, our monstera, lost her tiny pot (small child collided with the table she was on) and after I moved her to a bigger pot, she thanked me so much by being the queen I knew she could be!

Plants are great for air purification and well-being. Give them a try and start with something small and care free like a sansevieria or succulent. Good luck!

There’s something about the feeling of the wind in your hair/face that really fuels my energy. Have you ever tried skate boarding? Honestly, these days, roller skates are the wheels of choice but a skate board?! It’s fun and tricky. Personally, I can’t get enough…

If you live in Winnipeg, check out Scam Skate. Great folks and great service! Also, there’s a skatepark less than 2 blocks from their location on Sargent. Get a board, go for a ride.
