Staff Party 2014

freshairboutique

IMG_4404What an amazing night! We set up a camera in the shop and had a super fun photo shoot. Afterwards we took a limo to a wonderful restaurant where the chef fed us so well. The dinner was beyond delicious. IMG_4370Cards against humanity was the highlight of the night because of all the laughs that ensued... We ate chocolate cake and laughed and cried (because of all the laughing).

IMG_4485Thanks for the best night girls.... It truly was magical!

Professional class

Hairdresser-Power Last week I took a barbering course.  I thought it would focus on actual barbering, but we mostly went over trendy men's hair cuts.  I would have loved to have learned about some straight razor work or even new scissor over comb techniques.  Regardless, I did learn a few new things while I was attending.

tumblr_inline_ml3j3l3m5P1qz4rgpBetween this men's class and the Blonde Expert class I took in Toronto, I believe that I did learn a very crucial thing.  I am a professional.  I have years of training and practice to get me here.  I have a license, I have certificates and I have plenty of experience.  So why is it that people don't listen to us more?  How come it takes so much for a client to trust us?  The Blonde Expert class asked the question,"Can anyone be blonde?  Are more people suited to this shade than others?  Can everyone be a brunette?"  Even at the men's cutting class, not every head shape, can suit a specific haircut.

I know many reasons that folks have a hard time trusting us, is because we have (at one point or another) led them astray.  Maybe we suggested something they didn't like, maybe we cut their hair too much or too little, maybe we were rude in our 'all-knowing way', maybe a billion things.  One of the reasons that people don't trust hair stylists is because sometimes we mess up.  Professionals mess up.  It happens.

Demetri-Martin_tumblr_lo9k5j8SE31qhtggqo1_500When situations like this arise, we must handle it better because we are the professionals, and as professionals that are also human, mistakes will be made.  I have made plenty in my 14 year career, but I don't stop learning, trying, and staying humble.  I may know a lot about hair, but I only know so much about each individuals hair.  You know YOUR hair best and your stylist should be available for all kinds of professional guidance.  Hopefully your stylist has your best interest at heart and listens to your needs/wishes/demands etc...

So for all the bums that will be sitting in my chair, I'm going to do my best to keep things on the up and up.  I'm going to do my best to give you an experience for the books.  I'm going to do my best to recommend products and services that will help you on your hair journey.  I'm here for you (as a professional stylist mostly...)!

Peace

Teach me!

20140427-223156.jpg You guys! I'm taking a barbering class today! I've taken many men's cutting classes before but I'm hoping to learn a bit more about actual barbering.

Maybe some of you readers might have beards and may want to try a straight shave? Maybe? Maybe not?

Anyways, I recommend that whatever it is you do for a living, always try to learn more whenever you can. You may find that you can learn a lot from the most unexpected people and the most random situations.

Here we go!

Peace

Reflections

tumblr_lm3ll2XcF31qhbpdlo1_500 We're slowly coming up onto our four-year anniversary and I'm in a bit of a daze.  So much has happened from the beginning of the salon's birth to this very point.  We've had out fair share of staff turnover, rental issues, business development and then some.  As if four years can pass without some sort of confusion, instability, laughter, tears, sorrow, joy... you get me right?

tumblr_m3niu4qh6o1rnec4k

This past week, for some reason, really had me thinking of some of the decisions I've made and some of the goals I've set out for myself.  What am I going to do about 'this' in six months?  Where should we be as a business now?  As a family? Where should I be as a wife and mother?  Am I sort of in the area that I thought I would be in?  Am I growing?  Is the salon?

All these questions have had me reflecting on my life thus far.  I'm not going to lie, I'm blessed and very fortunate.  I have little to complain about and worry for.  I am healthy, pseudo-wealthy (in life and love), and somewhat wise.  Why do I need to reflect?  Well, how about for the fact that I am a human being and far from perfect.  I am still a small part of this great big 'dance' we partake in daily and I know that I can do more, be better, and try harder.  I know that I can accomplish more and learn and learn and learn...

When was the last time you took a step back to take a look at where you are?  When was the last time you reflected on your life?  Is it something you do regularly or might this be a new thing for you?  Think about it.  Don't think about it.  The choice is yours.

the fresh perspective...

LONG HAIR AND SWEATERS You long-haired ladies out there should be proud.  It takes time and dedication to have NICE long hair.  During these cooler months, long hair, and sweaters of any kind, are great combinations for warmth.

a4fy17-l-580x580 I made a post a while back about ways to help grow your hair if indeed long locks is what you're after.  Just to be clear, if you want to grow your hair you can do so by cutting it less ONLY if you are giving it a break from hot tools and over washing.  Don't skip your haircuts if you are addicted to your flat-iron.  Regular trims will help keep your ends from splitting up.

There are other ways to do your hair without using a blow dryer or flat-iron.  You gotta use your imagination and some old school tricks.  Rags are a great way to get texture and braids can add texture as well.  Wash your hair at night and after it's been air-dried for a few hours, throw some product in and section your hair into 3-6 sections and then put some braids in.  Don't use elastics to secure the ends as you will get a weird kink when you take them out the next morning.  The less braids will give you less of a kink.  The more braids you put in will kink it up nice, like a crimper!

tumblr_m9n1zvZ0MX1rxygobo1_500tumblr-fall-2012-fashion-trends-women-cable-knitsPatience is key and don't forget to ask your stylist if he/she think your hair can handle being long.  Remember, not all of us have the ability to have NICE long hair.  That's the fresh perspective...  And there's always extensions....
