HERE COMES THE SUN summer1A friend and I read an interesting fact about the sun and your hair.  According to Allure, 100 hours of direct sunlight on your hair is as damaging as having straight bleach on it for 30 minutes.  What?! Can you believe that?  When you really think about it, your skin gets darker in the sun so of course it can affect your hair!

Here are a few tips to protect your locks from the sun:

-try to use products with UV protectors.

-in a pinch, a little sunscreen mixed with water can be sprayed in for extra protection.

-cover it up!  Scarves and hats are quite functional and fashionable.

SONY DSC-make sure you clarify every now and again.  A clarifyer will strip your hair of environmental build up and product build up.  Once clarified, give yourself a treatment to replace the moisture you've washed out.

-braid it up and away!  Braids are the hottest trend right now and will expose less of your hair to the sun.

Summer-plaits-cropIt doesn't take long to check the ingredients on the products you buy.  Purchasing from a salon will allow you to dialogue with your stylist and he or she can steer you in the right direction.  If you're the type that spends ALL summer in the sun, get yourself some protection!  That's all I need to say, that's the fresh perspective...

You're Beautiful Dove-models-real-beauty

The beauty industry is indeed one of the many reasons we women have issues with ourselves.  As a key player in the beauty business, I believe that we need to find a real way to better our lives as women.  We need to find a real way to try to make a size 10 just as sexy as a size 4.  We need to find a real way to make being 5'1" just as sexy as 5'10".  We need to find a real way to make pale skin as sexy as tanned skin.

We need to appreciate more than the "norm" for beauty because we are all normal even though we are all different.  Even though I know I may not be typically beautiful, I know that I am attractive and sexy in my own off-way.  I know that I am confident.  Maybe posting my weekly outfits or hairstyles may seem a little self-indulgent but it's the least I can do.  Maybe selfies and duck faces aren't for you.  Maybe your real way of aiding the self-confidence of females is delivered in another way that's more comfortable to you. Like I mentioned before, I am a key player in the beauty industry and have no problem being an example.

This is the real way I can make a difference.  I can be an example and use my knowledge and expertise to really give perspective.  I know that I've been a little nervous to say that I could be an example, but don't you think all of us gals could be examples for each other?  Don't you think you may have something to teach?

A client of ours showed us a video on beauty and Renée touched on it on Thursday.  I just want to say that it really made me think.  Then I started inspecting my thoughts on beauty and my own physical looks.  For all my flaws and perks, there's no one else I'd rather be.  Let's try to help each other see that there really is beauty in all things.  That's the fresh perspective...

Change.  It.  Up. What's new in your life lately?  New car?  New spring kits?  New hair?  It's funny, out of all the people who sit in my chair day in and out, I still get a wee tingle when someone comes in and wants a totally NEW do!  First I get a little nervous, and then immediately excited!  When's the last time you did something completely different?

When's the last time you asked your stylist to suggest something out of the norm for you?  Any of you readers that know me personally know that I love change and love to see the energy that a new hairstyle (cut or color) can give my client.  We have an instagram feed that we post mega changes and 'the daily musings of us' on.  I want to share with you one of my favorite change ups of all...

Our instagram handle is @freshairboutique and if you're looking for some inspiration or motivation check out some of our hair images.  Maybe you'll like something and might want to try...  Don't forget, as long as you're healthy, your hair will grow back.  Change.  It.  Up.  That's the fresh perspective...

I've had enough.  -39 windchills and knee-length North Faces have paved the way for far too long. I'm ready for +5 and denim jackets! I'd love to pull out my beloved floral Doc Martens without fear of breaking my neck on all that ice. While I can't hurry mother nature, there are a few things I can do to prepare myself, and my garden. Now is a fantastic time to get certain things started indoors, so that when that inevitable thaw arrives, you've got some seedlings ready to transplant by May.

I was browsing Pinterest the other day, and stumbled upon a BEAUTIFUL photo of ginger growing in a container. This sent me into a flurry of google searches and page flips, until I could no longer hold my excitement, and decided I must try it out for myself.

Start off with a pot about twice the diameter of your root. Pick a fairly fresh, preferably organic 'hand' with lots of 'fingers'. Fill 'er up with a good, hearty potting mix.

Moisten up that soil. Ginger loves warm, moist soil.

Nestle your root on the soil, and place your pot in a warm spot. Your ginger won't  need direct sunlight at this point.

Although ginger is a fairly hearty root and can survive dry spells, it's best to keep the soil evenly moistened for optimal growth.

By fall, your tiny litte root could have yielded up to four times the amount of ginger. It's a bit slow going, but soon you should see a bit of green sprout up.

Stay tuned for updates on how this little guy is doing, and more!

have a great week!

Kevin Murphy Rinses shcon

Time for a product review folks!  I know, I know, we love Kevin Murphy and it's obvious, but it's also because it's sooooo good.  All of their shampoos come with rinses NOT conditioners.  This is a unique feature available only to Kevin Murphy users.  Simple concept.  You wash your hair, then you rinse it and condition your hair, then you rinse that out.  What?  What was the point of conditioning your hair just to rinse out the conditioner?  You might as well have just dumped your condish down the drain.

2010-11-04-moneyhole

Kevin Murphy does not sell conditioners, only rinses.  So here's the deal.  With KM rinses (note: it is a rinse not a conditioner) you apply the rinse to all your locks after you've washed and then you rinse out a third of the product!  Yes!  You leave most of it in, and depending on the type of hair you have, you may not rinse at all!

Now, I personally have never really used conditioner prior to hearing about the KM rinses because I believed that it's not what I put in and rinse out, but what I put in and LEAVE IN that would actually quench my hairs' thirst for moisture.  I would just skip the conditioning all together and go with a leave in because my hair was so dry...

IMG_0408

These rinses have the same concept.  You would wash then 'rinse' and then literally rinse for 2-4 seconds and move on.  For you folks that don't like to use styling products these rinses are perfect because when you get out of the shower you could just let your hair dry naturally and call it a day.  DO NOT FRET!  Your hair WILL NOT be greasy if you leave these rinses in.  They are designed to stay in and will be a great base for any other product you would like to use.  If you choose not to add anything else to your hair, that's fine too!  The rinse is a product that will also keep your hair conditioned, soft and healthy.

Kevin Murphy rinses come in a variety of types.  Ask your stylist which one would be best for you and get ready for a whole new condition!  That's the fresh perspective...
